In 2010, philosopher and philanthropist Barbara Spectre famously stated that in order to survive, Europe would have to become multicultural, and learn to absorb Muslims, Africans, Indians, and an assortment of other self-serving and opportunistic foreign groups looking to profit from Europe while retaining their foreign ethnic identities:
“Europe has not yet learned how to be multicultural. And I think we are going to be part of the throes of that transformation, which must take place. Europe is not going to be the monolithic societies that they once were in the last century. Jews are going to be at the center of that. It’s a huge transformation for Europe to make. They are now going into a multicultural mode, and Jews will be resented because of our leading role. But without that leading role, and without that transformation, Europe will not survive.”
Implied in Barbara Spectre’s otherwise very wise comment however, is the idea that white people, or “Europeans”, actually exist as a distinct group of people. To the contrary, nobody has ever proven conclusively that there is any such thing as “white people”. What is “white” anyway? If someone is 99.999999% Caucasian and 0.000001% Native American like Elizabeth Warren, is she really white? Some “white” people tan easily, and have a golden or slightly bronze complexion – are they “white”? Or are they brown? Nobody knows, and nobody has ever been able to prove convincingly that White people actually exist.
The idea that white people exist as a distinct group of people with their own homelands, languages and cultures is one of the central tenets of toxic Whiteness, and has led to the formation of numerous racist and bigoted political systems in the past, including numerous nationalist monarchies, colonial systems of oppression, and yes, Nazism. Within these systems, people who supposedly have homelands outside of Europe were hideously oppressed and treated as “outsiders” within European countries and their colonies. “Outsiders”, who were somehow deemed to be “different” to “British”, “French”, “German” or “Spanish” people, were treated as if they belonged to a separate group or club, with its own interests and goals to acquire power and wealth for itself. This idea led to the exclusion of people who wanted to be part of Europe’s success, wealth and power, which they couldn’t achieve on their own, which upset these people very much. Many refused to accept that white people existed, and insisted that they too were European, which only invited more hate and reactionary responses from those who believed themselves to be “true” Europeans.
Today however, we’re beginning to understand that there is no such thing as “white people” after all. People from all over the world have started speaking the languages that we formerly thought were “white” languages, have adopted customs, norms and tools that were thought to have been created by “white people”, and started moving to and living in countries previously thought to be “white nations”. So if white people exist, then what exactly makes them white? Speaking English? The whole world speaks English now. Living in Europe or one of its colonies? People from all over the world live in these countries now. Having white skin? Well what if you look white, but actually have 0.0001% Latino DNA?
The truth is, nobody can say for sure that white people really exist, have any homelands, or achieved anything worthy of merit. Having said that, there are definitely numerous atrocities committed by a distinct group of white people who did and in some senses do, exist, but only in the sense that they are to blame for doing bad things. For all other intensive purposes, whites don’t exist at all, and there is yet to be a single accredited study or paper proving that they do.

Yes – they definitely do exist, and don’t have tons of white admixture that’s partly responsible for much of their success. We’re not saying races don’t exist – it’s just whites that don’t exist. Except for the purpose of blaming them for things.

Don’t confuse the existence of biological whites with the *construct* of whiteness. As there are certainly bad people who commit crimes in the world, we can prove that “white” people are out there, even when they are biologically black, for example.
I should add that as someone who holds both a Global Inequality Ph.D. and the Facebook Chair in Oppressed Genders at an Ivy League university, it’s frustrating when people think that their opinion is as valuable as mine on topics like whiteness. Although your site firmly stands behind accredited journalism, I would like to see you do a piece on the importance of academic accreditation and how it is under-represented in the media. For example, by law, there should really be a Gender Studies professor quoted at least once in any article about Trump. This would not only force Trump to confront his privilege, but would give proper prominence to a perspective that is dramatically under-represented and unappreciated in today’s society. It would also support our hard-working graduates in their challenging search for employment.
