After analyzing many decades of economic data, the leading economists now agree that a thriving middle class is the key to a strong economy. What economists have found is that when the middle class is strong, wealth spreads to the poor and lifts the whole country up. This stands in direct contradiction to the “Trickle Down” theory advocated by conservatives, which says that deregulation and lower taxes are good for the economy. Informed by this economic discovery, Obama’s economic strategy is taking a “Middle Out” approach to the economy, which focuses first and foremost on strengthening the middle class.
The Economics
The middle class spends a much higher proportion of their income than the rich, so when the middle class does well, this has a positive effect on spending. More consumption means that businesses have more money to hire people, which boosts the economy. The middle class then benefit from the improved economy and the virtuous cycle continues. The problem with the Trickle Down theory, is that rich people tend to hoard excess wealth instead of spending it, which damages the economy. The key to a consumer economy is spending, or what economists refer to as aggregate demand. Think of money as the lifeblood of the economy and aggregate demand as the heart. Even if the country is extremely wealthy, if you don’t have enough spending then the money stops flowing and the economy dies.
Obama’s Pro Middle Class Policies
Obama’s middle class policies have put the country back on the road to recovery. The policies focus on two main areas: jobs and affordability. Specific policies include the following:
- Bolstering Our Manufacturing
- Rebuilding Our Infrastructure
- Making Education More Affordable
- Making Healthcare More Affordable
- Protecting Consumers
Sadly, minorities and single mothers often fall out of the middle class category. One of the key areas to focus on is more welfare and jobs programs that specifically target minorities in order to build a diverse middle class. In addition, single mothers often have to survive on insufficient government welfare, housing and alimony payments which don’t put them in the traditional category of the middle class. We need to bring single mothers into the middle class and start forcing patriarchal families to help support less fortunate single mothers.
Our government’s investment in the middle class has generated spectacular results for our economy, which bodes well for the future. We must however bear in mind that there are still a number of serious threats to American progress, mostly emanating from right wing think tanks funded by large corporate interests such as the Koch Brothers. We need to be vigilant and spread awareness of the catastrophic implications of Trickle Down Economics. The good thing is that the middle class are one of the most liberal groups in America who are unlikely to fall for the tricks of corporate interests. Middle class progressives need to continue to work hard to promote liberal values and support pro middle class policies so that our children can enjoy the benefits of a truly progressive liberal democracy.

Increasing the availability of student aid and loans is but one aspect of his education policy; his efforts to push corporations into hiring more part-time workers is another. Working part-time, it is much easier to balance school, work, and family, when compared to working full time.
We all know corporations don’t want to hire more employees; they would prefer to hire fewer people, and then make them work 60-70 hours a week, causing disruptions to the employees’ health and family lives. The President’s stunning health care policy virtually forces many firms to hire more part-timers, thus enabling a “lifetime learning” lifestyle. Today’s minimum wage, part-time employee will be, thanks to the progressive student loan policies of the President, our future defenders of endangered species, protectors of the discriminated against, and scholars who break new ground uncovering the many faults and flaws of ancient white men.
Of course, as new middle class workers, their taxes will both repay their student loans and provide new and enhanced services for everyone, as society climbs ever higher, and progress marches on!

yes, polarbear…and I might reiterate from a comment that got scrubbed or maybe I just didn’t submit, that as Ray Kurzweil says, there are BILLIONS of minds out there not connected to the internet. These are highly diverse minds and they will likely bring solutions to problems that non-diverse people couldn’t have even thought of. The skeptics will claim that these billion minds are mostly illiterate and cannot count, but this is just foolishness talking. We are ALL the same and from this sameness comes diversity that is our strength.
The more people can be connected to the internet, the more diversity, the more likely problems are to be solved. Increasing diversity has had a massively positive effect on corporations, government, academia, and the Federal Reserve Board. This has enabled us to successfully compete in a global workplace where the major commercial powers are highly diverse places such as China, Japan, and Germany. Affirmative action let us stay in the game when trading with the rest of the G20. Without this enrichment, how could we have possibly known how to make business deals?
Diversity lets us import Somalis, teach and train them, then export them back for diversification of malls in Kenya, for example…win-win-win.

My Womyn’s Studies professor was very wise, she also had a degree in psychology. Sometimes she would invite be out, and I did not want to appear heteronormitive, so I went.
She told me many things about the future of the family and about society, but that The White Male Patriarchy was very powerful, and used tradition to keep the people from progress. She said as long as Progressives, like ourselves, had access to the TV and media, we could slowly change attitudes using psychological techniques.
I didn’t really understand, she talked about three stages, desensitization, jamming and conversion. I don’t really know what they mean, but she said that as long as we had access to media, and people kept watching TV, then we could change the thinking of the whole population and advance progressivism.
Of course, the idea is to have no family at all eventually. People should only reproduce at accredited laboratories, and the ability to reproduce should be taken away from them and placed in the hands of experts.
